Local Savings, the Other Form of Early Warning We Rarely Tap Into
This op-ed argues that local savings, in their tontine, associative, and cooperative forms, are not limited to an economic role or a community resilience function. They also constitute a fully-fledged early warning mechanism, capable of detecting weak signals of social or security deterioration before dedicated institutional systems do. The author calls for connecting these grassroots initiatives with formal warning systems, rather than replacing or sidelining them.
